The Elephant in the Room: Firearm Safety for Individuals Living with Dementia & their Caregivers

  • Online via Zoom United States of America (map)

The increase in the prevalence of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias, along with the greater likelihood of an older adult having a firearm in the home raises concerns of intentional and unintentional injuries. Many healthcare systems and larger advocacy organizations recommend individuals living with dementia do not have access to firearms. However, the subject is an uncomfortable one and many do not know how to address it.

This session will educate attendees on the issues around ownership/access to firearms and other weapons as dementia progresses, including information on NYS laws regarding firearm ownership, transfers and engaging with law enforcement.
Program Manager for the Care Management team with Lifespan’s Finger Lakes Caregiver Institute, Susan Craine, LMSW, MPA will discuss best practices on ways to approach the subject with the person living with dementia, family members, and others involved in their care.
